The American Management Association recently published their latest research report: Coaching: A global study of successful practices.
Highlights include:
· Coaching is used by about half of today’s companies.
· Coaching continues to gain in popularity.
· Coaching is associated with higher performance.* Organizations that use coaching are more likely to say they are performing well in the marketplace (measured by revenue growth, market share, profitability and customer satisfaction).*Please see report for research details.
· External coaches are more frequently used for executives and are highly correlated with coaching success. Internal coaches are more frequently used for those at lower levels, however, with all levels, external coaches have a higher correlation with coaching success.
· Externally based methods of providing training to develop internal coaches are most strongly correlated with overall coaching success.
· Organizations top three reasons for using coaching are:
1. To improve individual performance/productivity
2. To address leadership development/succession planning
3. To increase individual worker skill levels
· Coaching is most successful when it is purposeful; viewed as a reward/opportunity; it is voluntary; is measured and is used to support the strategic organizational culture.
· The report claims that having an interview with the prospective coach has the strongest relationship with reporting a successful coaching program.
